Eternal Egypt - Egyptian Art Over Time

The simpler lines of this statue’s features, combined with a hairstyle from a much earlier era, exemplify the artistic conventions of the Late Period.
Late Period
664 - 343 B.C.
26th – 30th Dynasties

Politics:
The Assyrians drive out the Kushites in 666 B.C. Their reign is brief, thanks to a local ruler of Libyan descent named Psamtik. He defeats the Assyrians two years later and creates the last great native Egyptian period.

Art:
Psamtik I, conscious of Egypt’s long history, looks to the ways of the Old Kingdom. Like the Kushites, he tries to re-create the concept of “Egyptian.”
A more spare, highly idealized style replaces the elaborate decoration of the previous period.

The development of iron tools allows artisans to work on very hard stones.

Some Old Kingdom artistic conventions are revived.
