Late Period

Politics:
The Assyrians drive out the Kushites in 666 B.C. Their reign is brief, thanks to a local ruler of Libyan descent named Psamtik. He defeats the Assyrians two years later and creates the last great native Egyptian period.
Art:
Psamtik I, conscious of Egypts long history, looks to the ways of the Old Kingdom. Like the Kushites, he tries to re-create the concept of Egyptian.

A more spare, highly idealized style replaces the elaborate decoration of the previous period.

The development of iron tools allows artisans to work on very hard stones.
