Early Dynastic Period
3100 - 2686 B.C.
1st and 2nd Dynasties

Politics:
Menes, the first pharaoh, unites Upper and Lower Egypt in about 3100 B.C., founding the world’s first nation-state. He establishes the capital at Memphis, near the modern city of Cairo.

Art:
A strong central government supports the work of scribes, sculptors, and other artists and encourages new artistic methods:
Important men and women are depicted clothed and with more natural proportions.

The traditional and symbolic positions of seated and standing figures are established.

Enormous royal and private tombs manifest the beginnings of the quest for monumentality.
