The strong face, large head, and flaring hairstyle are all characteristics of early Old Kingdom realism.

Politics:
This is the age of the pyramids. These massive monuments are representative of the era during which Egypt, ruled by a god-king, experienced its most centralized form of government.

Later in this period, absolute monarchy gradually gives way to decentralization.

Art:
The pharaohs are the central focus not only of government, but also of religion and art, which are inseparably linked throughout Egyptian civilization.
Early in this period, naturalistic sculptures are among the first known portraits.

Toward the end of the Old Kingdom, the style shifts to formalized nude figures with long, slender bodies, idealized proportions, and large staring eyes.
