This stately lion exhibits a remarkable blend of abstraction and realism that conveys the power and glory of the New Kingdom pharaohs.

Politics:
The Theban Prince Ahmose conquers the foreign invaders and reunites Egypt in 1550 B.C. At its political and artistic peak, Egypt is ruled peacefully and powerfully by Amenhotep III from 1390-1352 B.C.

Amenhotep’s son, Akhenaten, follows him as pharaoh. He dramatically changes the old religion from one that worships many gods to one centered exclusively on the sun disk, Aten.

Tutankhamun rules after Akhenaten from 1336-1327 B.C. He works to restore the old gods and their temples, but instability persists.

Art:
For the first time, a now very cosmopolitan Egypt has a middle class comprised of independent craftsmen and artisans.
Pyramids become less important as grand funerary temples are built in the Valley of the Kings.

Many colossal royal statues and temples are built.

During the reign of Akhenaten, the highly unconventional, unusually realistic Amarna style develops.
