Many common household objects demonstrate Egyptian artists’ creative solutions to practical problems. The design of utilitarian items, such as headrests and cosmetic containers, often ingeniously combine functional requirements with religious and artistic ideals.

In general, the decorative arts appear to have experienced more creative leeway than conventional tomb and temple arts. In fact, wealthy patrons seeking unique objects seem to have deliberately encouraged originality.

top image For example, a popular type of luxury item during the reigns of Amenhotep III, Akhenaten, and Tutankhamun are statues representing servants burdened by cosmetic cases. No two are alike—a marked contrast to the static figures of other eras and the stereotyped representations typically seen in tomb art.
