Was every animal bigger in the Ice Age?
No, although in the past the largest members of many mammal families were
bigger than they are today. The giant beaver you see here is a good
example--at 7 feet (2.25 m) from nose to tail, it was twice as large as
today's beavers. There were also bears as big as horses, and lions as big as
today's polar bears!
Small or large, bones tell evolution's story
Massive bones are easy to find, and impressive to look at. Though small
animals aren't as spectacular to see, scientists find them just as
valuable as big ones. Even the tiniest bones tell a big story about
evolution and changing environments.
For today's mammals, what's small and what's big?
