Neandertals - human, but not quite like us
Neandertal (9k jpeg)
When we say "cave people," most of us mean Neandertals.
While Neandertals were definitely human,
they had much broader noses, huge front teeth, heavier brows,
smaller chins, and shorter, sturdier limbs.
30,000 years ago, Neandertals vanished
Neandertals survived 160,000 long, cold Ice Age winters.
In some places they even lived alongside modern humans like us.
Then, they mysteriously disappeared.
There may be a little Neandertal in everyone's genes
Some scientists believe that Neandertals lost the survival
race, overcome by modern human's more sophisticated culture
and language. Others believe it wasn't a race at all: Neandertals
were Homo sapiens just like us, and they simply passed their
heritage on to present-day people.
