Pearls - Fun Facts

Pearls
June 28, 2002 – January 5, 2003

Discover nature’s perfect gem.

Magical, mysterious, and radiant, pearls are the only gems born of a living organism. They come from the bottom of the world’s oceans, lakes, rivers, and streams. And they emerge from their watery origins perfectly luminous, not needing to be cut and polished.

See the most spectacular collection of pearls ever assembled in a gorgeous exhibition that combines nature, science, history, and glamour. Co-curated by The Field Museum and the American Museum of Natural History in New York, Pearls is the largest, most comprehensive exhibition ever put together on this subject.

The exhibition features more than 600 objects and nearly half a million pearls. See some of the world’s oldest, largest, and most valuable pearls. See exquisite ornaments that have adorned Queen Victoria, Marie Antoinette, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor. See pearls of every size, shape and color, ranging from white to pink, gold, purple, and black.

You’ll discover how mollusks form these rare treasures in a variety of marine and freshwater environments, trace the cultivation of pearls by humans, and find out why pearls seem to glow from within.

Don’t miss this dazzling display of nature’s most exquisite gift.

Take a walk through the highlights of the exhibition.
