Pearls: Behind the Scenes and in the Field

Nine Field Museum scientists—including two scientists who served as curators for the Pearls Exhibition—are conducting research on mollusks and pearl-related materials, such as shells, fossil shells, mother-of-pearl, and pearls themselves. In addition, The Field Museum has one of the world’s most comprehensive collections of mollusks, along with a significant collection of artifacts relating to pearls.

Besides inspiring intriguing exhibitions about nature and human culture, these resources generate new knowledge that helps us preserve fragile environments, reconstruct ancient civilizations, and better understand the biological and cultural diversity of our world

“Errors, like straws, upon the
surface flow,
He who would search for
pearls must dive below.”

John Dryden, Prologue to All for Love, 1678
