Protecting Endangered Ecosystems
Zoologist Rüdiger Bieler, co-curator of Pearls, is studying molluscan biodiversity in the Florida Keys. This region was thought to hold some 600 species when a National Marine Sanctuary was established for it in 1995.

Then Bieler’s team started examining museum collections and collecting species from around the Keys. The result: the count is up to 1,600 species—with no end in sight. Having an accurate picture of species diversity can be a powerful tool to assist conservationists and land managers in decisions about protecting endangered ecosystems.
