Tsavo - Field Studies

Meet the Guide

Hi. My name is Dr. Bruce Patterson. I am the MacArthur Curator of Mammals in The Field Museum’s Department of Zoology. I began studying the Tsavo lions in 1997 with the goal of understanding their distinctive appearance (the males lack manes), their evolution and ecology, and their associated behaviors. I have spent two seasons of fieldwork in Tsavo collecting information on group size, spacing, and composition in collaboration with Roland Kays and colleagues from the Kenya Wildlife Service.

It is important to investigate lions and their place in East African ecosystems in order to develop strategies for conserving biodiversity in Tsavo National Park.
