Geisha and courtesans are among the most intriguing and misunderstood figures in Japanese culture. They were at their peak in the Edo period (1615-1867 A.D.), and in recent decades their numbers have decreased dramatically.

Artwork depicting geisha and courtesans remains a significant symbol of the proliferation of culture in the Edo period.
