Jonathan Haas

Jonathan Haas is a native of the American Southwest, having been born and raised in New Mexico and receiving his undergraduate degree from the University of Arizona in 1970. He left the Southwest to pursue his graduate work at Columbia University in New York, and to broaden his interests to conduct archaeological research in Peru. After completing his PhD in 1979, he taught for five years at the University of Denver and then moved to Santa Fe, where he was the Director of Programs and Research at the School of American Research. At SAR, Haas supervised the publications program, visiting scholars, seminars, the archaeology program and had oversight over the magnificent collections in the Indian Arts Research Center.

Following his tenure at SAR, Haas moved to The Field Museum to become the Vice President of Collections and Research. He worked for five years in administration before moving back to full time anthropology to assume his current position as the MacArthur Curator of North American Anthropology. He is actively involved with a long term joint excavation program in the Santa Fe area with his wife and colleague, Winifred Creamer. Their joint research is looking into the impact of European colonialism on the Pueblo peoples of New Mexico and the origins of war among the ancient Puebloans. Haas has published on the origins of the state, the evolution of war, and his field research in Peru and the American Southwest. He is also actively involved in a current project to re-house the entire anthropology collection at The Field Museum and to upgrade the computerized catalog of those collections.
