General Information | Requirements | Writing Prompt | Selection Criteria | Institute Staff | Application Institute Dates: June 1- July 30, 2004 The Center for Cultural Understanding and Change is accepting applications from college and university faculty who teach in the Chicago area* and are interested in participating in an institute designed to transform courses and enhance teaching and research practices via community engagement and incorporation of community voices. The intent of this Urban Research and Curriculum Transformation Institute (URCTI) is to develop processes and products (syllabi and documents) that highlight students receiving participatory action research experiences in courses. It is designed especially for social sciences, gender, and ethnic studies courses but those from other disciplines are also encouraged to apply. A maximum of 10 faculty members will be selected and notified by mid-April. Each participant will receive a $4000 (inclusive) stipend upon satisfactory completion of the institute requirements. Top Requirements: Attend weekly half-day sessions during the summer phase of the Institute Participate in 3 roundtable discussions with community organizations Work with students in the summer internship Revise or devise course incorporating students doing research Facilitate 2 ethnic identity discussions (Cultural Connections program) All applications must include the following: 1. Top Selection Criteria: Priority will be given to those with terminal degrees and "continuing appointments." Top Institute Staff: Alaka Wali, Ph.D., Institute Director, is the John Nuveen Curator in Anthropology and Director of the Museum's Center for Cultural Understanding and Change. She has done research in Central and South America and in the urban United States. Rebecca Severson, M.A. Anthropology, and graduate of Northwestern's Southwest Ethnographic Field School is Manager of Urban Programs at CCUC. She will manage the Institute.
